Esperimento CMS

CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) is an experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider in Geneva. The objectives of the CMS Collaboration range in numerous fields, such as the validation of the electroweak unification theory, the physics of bottom and top quarks and the tau lepton, the search for dark matter, super symmetrical and exotic particles. The experiment has so far made a significant contribution to the progress recently achieved by the scientific community. Among the most important results, the discovery of the Higgs boson stands out.

The CMS Pavia group, with the support of the INFN section of Pavia, is involved in various fields:

  • Detectors: study of gas detectors for muon detection. In particular, RPC and GEM of which it has followed and still follows the development, testing and installation in the muon system. It currently participates in the maintenance of this system and in the irradiation tests of the detectors as regards their longevity in view of the luminosity increase of the LHC machine.
  • Simulation studies: simulations for the development of new gas detectors.
  • Data Analysis: search for dark matter signals, standard model physics
  • Electronics: Front-end electronics for the CMS tracker.
