Esperimento ICARUS

The activities of the ICARUS group concern the development of Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LAr-TPC) detectors for neutrino physics. The group participates in the ICARUS-T600 experiment, a 600-ton LAr-TPC that is currently taking data at Fermilab (USA), aiming to search for neutrino oscillations mediated by sterile neutrino states with the Booster Neutrino Beam.

The group has skills and leadership in all aspects of ICARUS-T600: construction of the wire chambers; design of the cryogenic system necessary to keep the Argon in the liquid phase, stable and pure; realization of a Photo-Multiplier Tube (PMT) system for the detection of the scintillation light, produced by ionizing tracks in liquid Argon, used for the purpose of trigger and timing of events; software development for data analysis. The expected duration for the data taking of ICARUS at Fermilab is approximately 3 years starting from October 2021.
